Intro:

For a personal project I had a strong vision of doing a series of style-frames about a budding rebellion in the midst of a totalitarian surveillance state.

The show would be called “No Gods No Masters”.

The title suggests that no one is above the other and that societies need balance to function.

Creative Brief:

For the creative brief, I wanted to go with something that suggested a state-wide conspiracy and cover up. Other key phrases that went into my research included “surveillance“ “clandestine operations” “cover up and conspiracy” and “the illuminati”

Inspiration:

For inspiration I leaned on various elements such as oppressive typography and fonts (heavy and bold and sold), bleak colors to convey the mood of joyless oppression and lack of freedom and secretive documents that have been redacted.

Other inspirations include:

Secretive masked figures operating in the shadows, distressed American flags and erased identities.

Process:

Frame 1:

I wanted to include themes about mistrust of the government.

Hence the spy cameras and the slogan about order and chaos.

You can also see a flying drone which also hints and surveillance as well as a redacted document – which suggests conspiracy and cover up.

Frame 2:

This frame hints more at a secret society that is controlling the masses.

The two hands on either side of the frame suggest exclusive control of the governing body by unseen forces.

Frame 3:

Lastly is of course the title – I wanted to go with a classic font that suggests “indoctrinated control” over the citizens of the state. In the background you can see a shadowy figure that looms over everything as a manipulating threat.

Final:

By breaking down these elements—symbolism, typography, and composition – I try to create a title sequence that reinforces the film’s themes before the first scene even starts.
